U6 Soccer

I have never have been the best at writing stories down. I guess it is because I am usually bringing up things in reference to conversations that are going on with a certain audience in mind. I have always had a fantasy to be a comedian - I would love to do it on the Christian Women tours. That would be a blast.

I will try to tell you the story of the Nicole and her soccer endevors.

Out of a moment of weakness I accepted the call to be a U6 soccer coach for Nicole's Soccer team. I have assistant coached before - 4 years. I use to play soccer at a very competative level and I have even refereed soccer to the college level. Needless to say, I have a large data bank of information and experience to draw from in regards to soccer.

I have 6 players on the team. 2 girls and 4 boys. We had our first game today. Since I have had 2 kids go through this level - I was WELL aware of what to expect. They still crack me up.

Picture this: I am on the field because at U6 there are no refs. so I am half ref half coach at this point. U6 is still partially bumble bee ball. They all swarm around the ball and move as a mass of children without passing or any kind of stratagy. Our game was a impressive demonstration of offense. Our team won 11-9 (not that we were keeping score).

During the first part of the game, Nicole was getting frustrated stuck in the middle of a pack of kids kicking. Standing in the middle of the swarming mass of children she announced it was HER ball. Everyone listened. They let her have the ball and she took the ball down and made a goal.

What you don't know at this point is that she is wearing "Hand me downs" from her brothers. The shin gaurds and the shoes are from John and Zachary's days of playing. I always secretely hoped that they would want to play again. I told Nicole that if she made 3 goals today (a hat trick) I would buy her new shin pink guards. After she made the first goal she turns around and yells across the field: "THAT'S ONE".

How many of you think she made all three goals?????

She was an animal. Knocking over children, pushing people out of the way, and kicking like a mule to get the ball. Kids were crying and running for their mama's but not my girl.... nope, you heard "THAT'S TWO!" above all the crying and cheering.

My timid kids were even getting a little agressive, feeding off my daughter's. I went up to one boy and said "You haven't scored a goal yet... Go do it" and what do you know... HE DID!! I ran up to him, picked him up, carried him back to our side of the field and said "Do it again!" He just smiled.

Fourth quarter (yes we play quarters in U6) Nicole is in. The other team has the ball and is making a run at our goal. Time is running down. Nicole BUSTS through the pack, knocks over 2 kids in her way gets the ball and goes 6 1/2 yards to their goal on a break away and scores!!!

Everyone is cheering and she yells - "MOM - REMEMBER - SHIN GUARDS!!!"

I need to increase the number of goals next game for new cleates. I'm thinking 5!
